Individuals reentering society after incarceration encounter numerous challenges that can impede their successful reintegration. One of the most significant hurdles is securing stable employment. Formerly incarcerated individuals face an unemployment rate exceeding 27%, which is higher than the U.S. unemployment rate during any historical period, including the Great Depression (cops.usdoj.gov). This high unemployment rate is often due to limited access to education and job training programs during and after incarceration. Approximately 41% of those released from prison lack a high school education, and 73% have a history of substance abuse, further complicating their ability to find and maintain employment (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
The absence of stable employment and housing increases the risk of recidivism. Studies have shown that within nine years of release, five out of six individuals previously incarcerated in state prisons are rearrested (nij.ojp.gov). Additionally, formerly incarcerated individuals often face legal and societal barriers, such as disenfranchisement, limited access to public benefits, and restrictions on housing and employment opportunities (civilrights.org).
Recognizing these challenges, Blueprint Reentry is dedicated to providing comprehensive support services to address these barriers.
